Muse: Jordan McClain

Posted by Alexis Corry on

Some people walk into your life at just the right time, and Jordan was one of those people. She first stepped into Lex & Lynne in 2015, not knowing that it would become such a meaningful part of her journey, or that she'd become such a big part of mine. Over the years, Jordan has been by my side through life’s many milestones, changes, and unexpected turns. She’s a dear friend. She has also been a huge part of my son’s life, which makes this feature even more special!

Recently, Jordan launched The Reese School, a beautiful and inspiring space dedicated to private classes and an online community that nurtures children through nature, exploration, and play, all with a strong emphasis on creativity. For the past six months, my son, Griffin, has been learning with Jordan and experiencing The Reese School firsthand. Watching him grow in new and creative ways has been so rewarding for me as a new mom, and both my husband and I have found ourselves applying these ideas and practices to our daily lives. It’s been a gift to witness and learn from, and I am so proud of what Jordan is creating.

From working in the shop to curating a collection of Alexis Co. pieces that have traveled with her around the world and through the years, Jordan’s love for color, texture, and style reflects the spirit of everything Alexis Co. creates. Her eye for fashion is instinctive, but what’s even more special is the way she infuses her pieces with memories, emotion, and a deep connection to self-expression.

In this Muse Story, Jordan shares the story of her first knit purchase, how Alexis Co. pieces have evolved with her, and the literal magic she experiences while wearing her knits. I’m so excited to share her words with you as Jordan embodies the heart of Alexis Co. in the most beautiful way!

Read on to get to know Jordan, her style, and the passion she brings to everything she does...

What are you passionate about?

I believe the best place for a child to create, explore, play, and learn is in nature. Trying to foster a love for nature and self expression that is truly child-lead. This is my greatest passion.

Tell us about the first time you walked into Lex and Lynne

The first time I met Lex was in 2015. I was not looking forward to coming back home to Sewickley after my first year of college in LA. Looking for a way to fill the time, a mutual friend had offered to connect with me with Alexis to see if she needed any help at the stores. I worked primarily at Lex's men’s store. God I loved that store. I loved waking up and going there every day. It was cozy. It had the scent of smoke, lavender, leather, and wood. I went through my dressing in menswear phase here. Which definitely shaped my personal style to this day.

Tell us about meeting Lex...

She was young (as in not that much older than me), and tan and had longgg blonde hair and looked effortlessly cool and timelessly chic at the same time. Darcy, her mom, was of course right next to her. She was fussing with beads. She looked too cool to be from Sewickley. She felt like a piece of my puzzle. It felt like we were more than just co-workers right away.

How long have you been following and shopping at Alexis Co.?

Been following? I feel like I’ve been a part of it since that day! Hahaha. That very first day I walked into the store to be interviewed I saw this cream cropped knit sweater that I just had to have. A few months later, I bought it for myself. That was one of Lex’s first knit designs.

What is the oldest piece in your collection?

Ohhhh, probably some of Lex's beaded bracelets or my kiliim pillows. Those have been in every home I’ve lived in in my adult life.

What is the newest piece in your collection?

My most recent purchase is one of the Granny Square Maxi Dresses with the long flowy sleeves. I LOVEEEEE that dress. As a curvier woman, I'm always hesitant when I try on former fitting clothing items. But I feel like this happens so many times with Lex's designs…I see something I love that she has made and I'm like 'no way that will look good on me' and then she will force me to just try it on, and then I do and BAM, I look fucking incredible. Well, this dress was one of those instances, haha. Everytime I put it on I feel like a sexy mermaid.

What is your favorite piece in your collection and why?

Oh wow, that's a tough one. I want to say my duster, because it truly is a work of art. I keep it out on constant display in my house. But, I also want to say either my green or brown matching skirt and sweater sets. Because they are my trusty go-to's -- I pack those on every trip I go on. I can dress each skirt and top set up or down, mix and match, and I always feel good in them.

But I think the actual answer is my blue knit turtleneck. It is the most stunning shade of blue there ever was. And it is unbelievably soft and cozy.

Is there a memory you have made that is tied to your favorite piece?

I mentioned my blue knit sweater, I especially love this sweater because it is literally a tool for me as a teacher. I swear I'm not crazy, this sweater is magic, just hear me out. The first time I ever wore it was to work on a chilly, rainy day in Los Angeles in January. The weather was disregulating me so i wore the sweater to keep myself cozy, every time I put it on it feels like a day long hug. Anyways, I get to school and that morning there was this one little girl who really really didn’t want to come to school that day. You could tell the weather was bothering her and she just wanted to stay home and be cozy with her parents. While I was talking to her she touched my hand and brushed my sweater and immediately became enthralled by how soft and cozy it was. I told her anytime she needed cuddles to come over and I'd give her a cozy sweater hug and she did, too many times to count that day. And now anytime I wake up and look outside and am left wanting something cozy, I still turn to that magic sweater.

How does your collection show off your personal style?

Color? Color is so important to me. It inspires me, it grounds me, it connects me with others... I think its less about what makes up my collection and more of how I style each piece. My style has evolved so much throughout the years, but my Alexis Co. pieces remain the cornerstone of my wardrobe, despite the phase I am in, because they are so versatile.

Do you have a hack for how you wear your pieces? Maybe something we've never seen before?

I really love to wear vintage slip dresses underneath my knits. Do not be afraid to layer!

What about Alexis Co. has you coming back each season?

My style has changed so much throughout the years. However, my love of color, beautiful things, and being cozy always stays with me. And that's why Alexis Co. has remained a steadfast in my closet for almost a decade now.

Do you travel in your Alexis Co.? If so we would love to hear about it, or a short story! And if you have pictures, please share!

For some reason I always turn to my Alexis Co. knitwear for special events. I’ve worn my green set to a wedding in the Hamptons. My brown set to a wedding in Maine. And my most favorite was when I wore my Love Duster to my friend's rehearsal dinner in Mexico. I was the maid of honor and I wanted to wear something that represented how I felt on that day… full of light, love, joy, comfort, and color.
